The ladies continue to dominate our series on Wednesday, 9/24, as we present another very unique and thought-provoking entry to the western genre.
As the story unfolds, there's a deficit of good, honest women in the West, and Roy Whitman (John McIntire) wants to change that. His solution is to bring a caravan of over 100 mail-order brides from Chicago to California. It will be a long, difficult and dangerous journey for the women. So, Whitman hires hardened, cynical Buck Wyatt (Robert Taylor) to be their guide across the inhospitable frontier. But as disaster strikes on the trail, Buck just might discover that these women are stronger than he thinks.
Sturdy performances from a brilliant cast of women make this 1951 MGM production a very intriguing motion picture. Directed by famed film-maker, William A. Wellman, the studio was charting unfamiliar territory in the ambitious production helmed by studio head, Dore Schary, who thrived on unusual story lines, and who consequently had a somewhat short tenue at the mammoth conservative Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio. The ladies include such fine performers as the always magnificent Hope Emerson, Denise Darcel, Julie Bishop, Marilyn Erskine, and Renata Vanni. Robert Taylor, as always, delivers a sturdy western performance in this unusual outing for the legendary actor. The film definitely found a substantial audience in 1951, as the box office was fairly lucrative
