During the 1960’s, Dr. Lonnie Smith contributed to a golden era of Jazz in New York City as a prominent Hammond B3 organ alchemist. A true virtuoso of his craft, he traversed genres and was revered as a mentor by many artists including George Benson, Lou Donaldson, Don Was, and Rudy Van Gelder. His music has been sampled in rap, dance and house grooves while being credited as a forefather of acid jazz. He played regularly at Snug beginning in the 1990s, and as fate would have it, one of his last performances before his passing in 2021 was at Snug Harbor. Tonight, a renowned ensemble of Dr. Smith's mentees and former music collaborators pay tribute to his legacy, featuring: Donald Harrison - saxophone Joe Dyson - drums Joe Ashlar - B3 organ Will Blades - B3 organ Kyle Roussel - B3 and piano Joe Dyson - drums The one-of-a-kind performance is presented in partnership with NOLAxNOLA.
