Details:
Jessica Whitaker, President of the Sunapee Region Mycology Club (SRMC), is an amateur mycologist living in Enfield, NH. Jess is both a “mycophile” and a “mycogal”, whose passion for all things mycological comes from her nearly 20 years’ experience exploring the local environment in search of different fungi, and her time spent achieving a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Biology from Plymouth State University.
Fungi are neither animals nor plants; a fungus has characteristics of both living creatures. If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about the study of fungi, or mycology, then this workshop is for you! Please join us at the Montshire for a primer on mycology before heading to our trails to become more acquainted with these organisms that are often overlooked or misunderstood. Following our walk in the woods, we’ll use microscopes to get a closer look at the specimens that we find. Jessica Whitaker will teach you some history and ecology while you’ll learn about mushrooms and how to better identify them. Feel free to bring in your own specimens that you’re curious about!
Attendees are encouraged to bring a notebook and pen or pencil, magnifying glass (if they have one), and/ or camera, drinking water and a snack. It is recommended to wear comfortable clothes for hiking/woods exploration, as well as sturdy boots or sneakers (we’ll be on trail, but also traversing some of the forested landscape). Bug repellant is also encouraged.
Capacity: 20 adults
