Open Music presents a screening of the iconic 1974 afrofuturist, science fiction odyssey, Space is the Place! Please join us in a fundraiser event for our dear friend Bryan Ferlez, while we come together to present the landmark film by Sun Ra and his Intergalactic Solar Myth Arkestra, with an opening performance of Sun Ra’s works by Open Music. All proceeds raised will go to benefit the Ferlez family while they navigate this health crisis.

About The Movie
Avant-jazz mystic Sun Ra brought his pioneering Afrofuturist vision to the screen with this film version of his concept album. It’s a wild, kaleidoscopic whirl of science fiction, sharp social commentary, goofy pseudo-blaxploitation stylistics, and thrilling concert performance, in which the pharaonic Ra and his Arkestra lead an intergalactic movement to resettle the Black race on their utopian space colony.
On May 27, 2025 our dear friend, creative partner, and Open Music family member, discovered a 1.5″ brain tumor after experiencing very few symptoms, which turned out to be an extremely aggressive cancer. The next day he received emergency brain surgery, with a follow up on July 8 to remove any remaining cancerous tissue or new growth.
The road ahead for Bryan, his wife Emily, and their son Noah is likely to be rough on its best days and they need all the love and support we can give them.
You may know Bryan as a lover of Pennsylvania’s creeks and woodlands, or you may know Bryan as a brilliant scientist and educator, or perhaps you’ve met him at a shape-note sing, or maybe you’ve enjoyed a cup of coffee together and talked about your shared love of Eric Dolphy.
