Multilingual singer-songwriter and cultural storyteller Amelia Ray brings The Soulevillance Tour – a five-month journey through the U.S., Canada and Europe to spread compassion in song – to town. The San Francisco Bay Area native’s latest single, “Pretending to Read,” a poignant track in the style of Bossa nova, blends observation and introspection into a melody that sneaks up on you like a mysterious stranger on a train. In the ’80s, while a student at Indiana University, CJ and her all-woman punk band climbed through the windows of a law school classroom, stood on desks, and sang a tune she wrote called “I Think I’m Gonna Die (and I Know I’m Gonna Flunk).” Today, CJ is still writing songs, but now they might chronicle a drunken dinner party, the tear-down of grandpa’s house, or the joy and sadness of our headfirst dive through life.
