The Multicultural Genealogical Center welcomes Dr. Frans Doppen as he speaks about his book, Richard L. Davis and the Color Line in Ohio Coal: A Hocking Valley Mine Labor Organizer, 1862-1900. Richard L. Davis, was an early African American labor organizer who rose to national prominence in the United Mine Workers of America.
Dr. Doppen was born in 1957 in The Netherlands. There he earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Utrecht University. As part of his program of study, he joined an exchange program at the University of Florida in the United States in 1980. In 1984, he returned as an immigrant and began a 19-year career as a middle and high school teacher. After completing his PhD. at the University of Florida, he began his career as a teacher educator at Ohio University in 2003 where he has been Professor of Social Studies Education until his retirement this August 15.
He has served as executive editor of the Ohio Social Studies Review and president of the International Assembly of the National Council for the Social Studies.
Dr. Doppen has authored many book chapters and articles addressing local as well as global issues.
In 2023, he and Toni Fuss Kirkwood Tucker co-published “The Power of Oral History Narratives: Live Experiences of International Global Scholars and Artists in their Native Country and After Immigrating to the United States”.
